Here is a real life scenario demonstrating the importance of my ability to make decisions based on my personal knowledge of our country combined with common sense. This example will save billions of dollars per year, dramatically reduce pollution, and improve the quality of life for millions of Americans. It is one of many examples of the impact one level head can have on a system clogged with layers of bureaucracy, not by trying in vain to dissolve the clog, but simply by going around it.
Forest fires start naturally and there are millions of homes located within potential burn areas around the country. Every year when the fires start, equipment and personnel are brought in, sometimes from all over the country. Specialized firefighting aircraft and helicopters are used regularly. Mobile base camps are created for support and overtime pay is always guaranteed. Loss of property from these wildfires, though tragic and unforgiving, is unavoidable. The question is never whether residents will be affected, but how many.
Common sense says to use preventative clearing methods aggressively before each fire season. This will substantially reduce the chance of a small fire becoming a major wildfire. It will greatly reduce both the man-made and natural pollution by reducing the amount of equipment used on the ground and in the air. Smaller fires produce less smoke, toxins, and ash. Costs would be marginalized by managing the entire process proactively before any fires start. Though not completely preventable, wildfires will be substantially more containable.
Less fuel, man hours, chemicals, and overall resources are needed in the preventative approach. Homeowners would be less interrupted in their daily lives, maintaining their schedules and income. Though environmentalists may scream "murder!" at the idea of active preventative forest clearing, the overall amount of environmental destruction and home loss would be greatly reduced. Even nationwide insurance rates would drop because of lower catastrophic loss for the carriers. The most rewarding benefit of all would be the risk for loss of life (both human and animal) would be lowered dramatically from this annual natural occurrence.
